    Reach Up!!!
    Lent March 2011

How do you clear your mind from the insanity of our news breaking current events?   You may be pleased by the fact that we’re living in historical times.  Simultaneously, you may wish that the world in general was at peace and that all peoples were tolerant and loving. Indeed, some folks try to accomplish a state of utopia with addictive drugs which, incidentally, has absolutely no positive impact on improving today’s global lunacy.  We know that social narcotics deteriorate and deplete morality.

Proverbs 1 32:33 For the self will of the simple kills them, the smugness of fools destroys them.  But he who obeys me dwells in security, in peace, without fear of harm.”

Do we want to resolve certain situations and clean-up?  Denying that the problem exists or walking away from it won’t solve anything and indeed, frequently compounds an already undesirable situation.  We need to try to work things out and improve our state of affairs.  The next question is how do we begin to rectify our staggering problems?

There are certain individuals who will tell you that “it’s easy“.  All you need to do is this, that and the other.  Depending upon the gravity of a problem, it is impossible to defeat some ….alone. Frankly, there are no simple solutions to unique and untested problems for governments or for individuals.

Where is the connection to religion, spirituality, governments and problem solving?  We need to use our intellect, experiences as well as educations.  We also need to trust in the Will of God.  Frequently, when trying to solve problems, we forget that the power of God is ever present and patiently awaiting our supplications.

God is often blamed for problems.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  God is Pure Light and Pure Love.
Our world is a broken world.  God has given us free will.  He did not create us as puppets in order to control our every thought and action.  He allows us to make our own decisions.  Frequently, we make the wrong decisions, get into trouble and then blame God.  We also break His Commandments as well as Jesus’ teachings, thereby distancing ourselves from Him and find ourselves in deeper darkness.

When we, as Catholics and firm believers of  our faith seek out His Will through prayer, Holy Scripture reading and especially the reception of the Holy Sacraments of Penance and Holy Eucharist, we not only may receive what we seek, but most especially, we will be blessed with the grace of peace.  Knowing that Jesus and Mary are standing by our sides encouraging us to make right decisions because of our trust in them instills us with an unexplainable sense of tranquility.  Our prayers are sometimes answered quickly, but sometimes the Lord wants us to grow in divine life and we need to keep praying for solutions and to ask friends and family to pray for us as well.  Our Lord wants to hear from us.  Surrender your longing heart to Him.

PSALM 31:4- “You are my rock and my fortress; for your name’s sake you will lead and guide me.”

Attending Liturgy is very powerful.  We are terribly impoverished when we don’t accept and receive the Holy Eucharist which is the source, center and summit of our Church.

Lent invokes the spirit though sacrifices, corporal works of mercy and increased prayer.  This is a great season in our Church which allows us to get in touch with our soul and to clean house.  Mom always said that cleanliness is next to Godliness.  Listen to your mom and mine, Our Blessed Mother.

Gaze upon the Crucifix and reach up to the love that Jesus shows us.  Touch his wounds and let his Precious Blood pour into your hearts, minds and bodies.  It may not be easy, but you can try.  He invites you to come closer to him.  Take the first step and he will help you with the second step.

March 25th, we celebrate the Annunciation of the Lord.  This is a wonderful day of celebration for all Christians.  Through Mary’s fiat, we are given the salvation into eternity and the Presence of Divine Providence.  This should be first and foremost in our lives.

March 19th, is St. Joseph’s Feast Day.  Jesus, Mary and Joseph, the Holy Family, forever guide us to a deeper and more enlightened spiritual life.

Always make an effort to reach up to the Crucifix!!!  May this Lent assist you in realizing, appreciating and practicing the heritage of your Christian faith as well as bringing you nearer and dearer to our Lord and Savior, Jesus.

Perhaps more than ever, we need to pray for world peace.  Thank you for this opportunity.

    Your companion in prayer,

    Mary Sayad
